Legacy Pledge
What is the Legacy pledge?
Legacy pledge is a simple, fun, web based pledge system that allows individuals to publicly promise to do something positive over the next twelve months in recognition of the Olympic Games and access relevant support and incentives to help to fulfil their promise.
Our ambition:
To inspire 100,000 people from within Cheshire and Warrington to do something different to mark the year of the Games!Where did Legacypledge come from?
At 1249 BST on 6th July 2005, the International Olympic Committee announced that London had surpassed Moscow, New York, Madrid and Paris to secure its bid to deliver the 2012 Olympic Games.
At the heart of the bid was a pledge made by Chairman Lord Coe to use the events to inspire two million people to take up sport and physical activity, aiming to leave a lasting legacy for the UK.
It's important to remember that the original Games included music, oratory and theatrical performances. So even if you are not the sporting type there's a reason to celebrate this historic international event.
Government has made certain promises in relation to the Games, to ensure that they are enjoyed by everyone and that all corners of the UK reap the benefits of the Olympic legacy - whether social, sporting or economic. Their third promise is to promote community engagement and achieve participation across all groups in society through the Games. Legacypledge.org aims to bring that promise to life here in Cheshire and Warrington by using the Games to inspire people to do something different.
How will it work?
It's easy. Individuals can browse the site to inspire their personal pledge. Video-clip pledges can then be recorded via a webcam and uploaded via PC to www.legacypledge.org for the world to view.
Pledges are categorised (e.g. sport, DIY, cooking, learning etc) to connect pledgers to local providers who offer products or services that can help them to achieve their pledge. Pledgers will be able to share their pledge with friends, comment on other pledges, upload progress reports and access a variety of competitions, offers and incentives via the site.
How will people know about it?
There will be a series of community roadshows taking place in shopping centres, pubs, community centres, business and community events, encouraging people to pledge on site.
Do pledges have to be sport related?
No. Individuals will define their own pledge and invited to categorise into the nearest fit to enable them to connect to relevant providers.
What kinds of organisations will 'pledgers' be connected to, to fulfil their ambitions?
The site will connect pledgers to public, private and voluntary sector providers who offer products and services relevant to the pledge category. Providers will pay a small fee to advertise their products and services to their target audience. Providers are not endorsed by Legacypledge.
How will the scheme reinvest profits?
The scheme will reinvest back into site and service development and will commit to reinvesting profits into community development and sports development, growing our emerging local talent (e.g. Sport Cheshire's Rising Stars Fund).
How can organisations get involved?
- Link your site to the pledge site
- Ensure you are featured on the site along with relevant products, services, initiatives and incentives
- Raise awareness of the pledge within your organisation and advise us of any collaborative roadshow opportunities
- Encourage colleagues, communities and customers to pledge...and pledge yourself!
How will Legacypledge complement other 2012 activities and initiatives?
The site will proactively promote Embrace the Games activities with direct site links. Data collected from pledgers can also be used to promote 2012 activities and events.
Is the pledge connected officially to London 20121?
No. Legacypledge has no official relationship with London 2012, LOCOG or Olympic Partners, nor is it endorsed by them. We do however share Olympic values and are supported by key local stakeholders, delivering Legacypledge as an Embrace the Games 2012 legacy for Cheshire and Warrington.
